Moon Phases - Crystals and Intention Setting Explained

With the largest supermoon in seventy years happening this month, I wanted to delve a bit into the different moon phases and how you can use the moon, along with your crystals, to set specific intentions.

moon, lepidoliteWhen the moon is full or new, the gravitational pull of the moon and sun are combined - meaning that the moon has a great deal of influence over the earth. During a supermoon, however, the moon is closer to the earth than on a regular full moon, and this can create an intensified effect. Forces of nature can be influenced by the increased gravitational pull of the supermoon. You may also see great weather events during a supermoon. On average, a lunar month lasts 29.5 days. During this time, it goes through several phases where you can set out your crystals with specific intentions or goals in mind. In this post, we'll briefly cover how to set intentions as well as review each of the moon phases and how you can use them to accomplish your goals.

Setting Intentions

“Every intention sets energy into motion, whether you are conscious of it or not.” - Gary Zukav

gridSetting intentions with your crystals can be a very powerful exercise. It helps manifest any number of things in your life; from attracting something to you, to something you would like to change or be rid of altogether. For example, if you wish to attract prosperity and good fortune, use a citrine stone to set your intentions during the first quarter moon. Or, if you wish to do a basic purge during the waning gibbous phase, use amazonite to help clear a troubled mind or dispel negative energy around you. Once you've programmed a stone, it will continue to emit the energy you imbue it with, until it is cleared.

When preparing for setting intentions, you'll want to take some time and think about what your goals are, particularly for the specific moon phase and crystal you are using. What are you trying to accomplish by setting these intentions? What is it that you dream of? Now is the time to acknowledge it. Ensure your stone has been cleansed and ready for its new task, as well as cleanse the area you will be working in, before you get started. You will also need to cleanse a sacred or dedicated space for the crystals to sit. Pick somewhere you will see it often and be reminded of your goal.

When you are ready to begin setting your intentions, bring the cleansed stone into your work space - be sure you are free from distractions. To start, it helps to write your intentions down and set them on their journey into the universe. Take the crystal in your hands, visualize what you hope to manifest and speak it aloud. Try not to be too specific when setting your intentions. You may want to win the lottery, but the universe may have a different plan to fulfill your desire for wealth and prosperity. Afterward, take a moment to feel the emotions as if your wish has come true and offer the vibration of success to the universe. You will be amazed at what unfolds.

Phases of the Moon

The moon, or the nearest astronomical body to us, profoundly influences all aspects of our lives. Because of this, it is important to choose the appropriate time for setting intentions in your crystals.

This is when the moon's energies are at their strongest and should be use for productivity, although it is not a good time for making major decisions. Full moons are tied to our emotional side. This shift in the moon can also be used to turn introspective and study what has brought you to this point. What in your life has been affecting you? Is it negative or positive? This is also a time to rest and meditate of what you've learned throughout the previous cycle and prepare for the upcoming one.

A protective stone, black tourmaline also helps with grounding, creating a psychic shield, and works well for deflecting and dispelling negative energies, entities, or destructive forces. It increases physical vitality, cleanses the emotional body of negative thoughts, anxieties, anger or feelings of unworthiness, and purifies one’s own negative thoughts, neutralizing internal conflicts while turning them into positive energy

Crystal Cleansing and Energizing

Over time, and especially after use, most crystals require cleaning and recharging. While there are multiple ways to do this, not all crystals can be cleansed using all methods. For example, you shouldn't place calcite in water, malachite should never be near salt, and amethyst fades if left in the sunlight for extended periods.

cleansing and energizing crystals

Some may ask, if crystals are so particular with how they are cared for, then why cleanse them at all? Well it's simple. Over time crystals absorb negative energy and vibrations from their environment. As healing tools, crystals should have the highest vibration possible so that you may receive the greatest benefit from the stones properties. Cleansing them frequently ensures that you always have your healing crystals at their highest potential, as well as removing any negative vibrations, or energy, from the stones.

As I'm crafting healing kits, I make sure to take the time to cleanse my own energy from each kit sent out. One of my favourite methods to use is smoke from sage bundles or palo santo and selenite to clear any stored energy. I also cleanse the stones in salt water (if safe to do so) upon receiving them, and charge them using the full moon.

While there are a few exceptions, of which I will outline below, I recommend weekly cleanings and recharging at least once a month. For difficult emotions such as depression or grief, I suggest cleansing your stones several times each week or more if your intuition guides you to do so. Always trust your instincts when using your crystals.

Cleansing Methods

The cleansing methods I've outlined below are not necessarily safe for all types of crystals, so please be sure to read each method carefully and choose which one is right for each of your stones.  Citrine, kyanite, selenite and azeztulite are self-cleaning and while they should be recharged (see instructions below), they do not require other cleansing methods.

After your crystals are cleansed and dry, they are ready for charging and use. If your stones are for ritual use, wrap them in natural fibers, such as soft cotton, and store them in a safe place where they will not be handled or touched by others.

Water Cleansings:

There are two types of water cleansing - one with flowing water and the other with salt water. Both work equally well, although you will need to be sure your stones can tolerate water and/or salt before using either of these methods; typically, these are ones with a MOH hardness level of 6 or above.

*WARNING* do not use this method to cleanse the following crystals: amber, turquoise, imperial topaz, red coral, fire opal, moonstone, opal, Himalayan salt crystals, selenite, dioptase, all calcites (including blue, green, and orange calcite), angelite, malachite,  azurite, kyanite, and kunzite. Do not soak labradorite as it will dull the flash.

Running Water

amazonite cleansed in flowing water

To cleanse your crystals using running water, you can use a natural, flowing  waterway or you can use water from your tap. Simply place the stone into the the flowing water and leave it there until you feel your stone is cleansed (at least 60 seconds). If you are placing your stone in a stream, be sure to place them into a bag so you do not lose them. Another method is to partially fill a bowl, hold the rocks in one hand and with the other scoop up water, pouring it over the stones. As I said earlier, trust your instincts in this. Once you feel that the crystal is cleansed, remove it from the water and set aside to dry. After it is cleansed, it is ready to be recharged if necessary.

Notes: *Never have salt close to malachite or put it in water. Malachite is toxic and should only be used in polished form.

Salt Water

To cleanse your crystals using salt water simply add sea salt to a glass bowl of warm water, ensuring the grains are completely dissolved to avoid scratching your crystals. Add the crystals to the glass bowl, ensuring they are covered in water, and leave until you feel that they have been sufficiently cleansed (at least 60 seconds). Always trust your instincts; once you feel that the crystal is cleansed, remove it from the water, rinse in cool water to remove any salt residue, and set aside to dry. Afterward, it is ready to be recharged if necessary.

Notes: *Any stone with hardness under 7 should not be cleansed in salt water. This means rocks that contain metals, have a porous surface or have a higher water content. If you are not sure of the hardness of the stone use another method of cleaning. *Never have salt close to malachite or put it in water. Malachite is toxic and should only be used in polished form.

Selenite or Quartz Cleansings:

Both selenite and quartz crystals contain high vibrations and can be used to safely cleanse other stones. Place your stone on top of a quartz cluster or a flat selenite stone and leave overnight.

Rice or Salt Cleansings:

For this method, simply bury the crystals in a bowl of salt or brown rice; be sure that the stone can tolerate sea salt if you choose to cleanse your stones with it. Leave it in overnight and remove in the morning. When you are done with this type of cleanse, throw out the salt or rice. Do not re-use it.

Notes: *Any stone with hardness under 7 should not be cleansed in salt water. If you are not sure of the hardness of the stone use another method of cleaning. **Never have salt close to malachite or put it in water. Malachite is toxic and should only be used in polished form.

Smoke Cleansings:

Smudge Stick

citrine, amazonite, ametrine, green fluorite cleansed with sage A smudge stick, or sage bundle, is a wonderful cleanser and safe for all crystals. Simply light the bundle and waft the smoke around the crystals or hold the crystals in the smoke until you feel the crystal has been cleansed. Again, trust your instincts. Once cleansed, the crystals are ready for use, or to be re-charged if necessary. You can also use sweetgrass, sandalwood or cedarwood bundles for this type of cleansing.

Palo Santo

Palo santo (Burseara Graveolens) or "Holy Wood" is related to frankincense, myrrh, and copal. It is an aromatic wood used as a spiritual remedy and is responsibly harvested from fallen branches. Like the smudge stick, it is also a wonderful cleanser and safe for all crystals. This can be done by lighting the wood, allowing an ember to form and blowing out the flame. Waft the smoke around the crystals or hold the crystals in the smoke until you feel the crystal has been properly cleansed. Once cleansed, the crystals are ready for use, or to be re-charged if necessary.

Cleansing through visualization is simply using your mind to visualize energy cleaning your stone. You can do this by holding the crystal in your palm and visualizing a bright light surrounding it. In your mind, see the light enter the stone and absorb the accumulated energies, taking away the stored energy within the stone. Repeat until you feel happy and your stone feels light.

Charging or Energizing Your Crystals

moon cleansing tray

Charging a crystal or stone is a simple process that allows it to regain its natural energy so that it is at its fullest and greatest potential. After cleansing your stones, you can recharge your crystals by the methods outlined below. Again, please be sure that you are using a method, which is safe for your crystal and one that feels best to you. Your intuition will guide you in the best way to charge your stones. With all methods of charging, first set your intention and state silently or aloud that you are doing this to charge your crystal for the best and highest good of all concerned.  After your stone is charged, thank the Divine by whatever name you know it for assisting in charging your stone. Whichever method you choose, the exact length of time needed for charging varies according to the state of the crystal or stone, to begin with. Trust your intuition and higher self to lead you to the best methods and lengths of time for you and the stone.

Sunlight or Moonlight

The sun's and moon's rays are very energizing, as well as energetically clearing. Keep in mind that sun's energies are strong while the moon has a more subtle, gentle energy. You can use this method to both clear and charge your crystals at the same time.  Find a safe place and leave your crystal for 24 hours or more (up to a week) in sunlight and/or moonlight. Some crystals colors will fade in sunlight, so those should be charged only in moonlight. Some sun-sensitive stones are amegreen, amethyst, ametrine, green apophyllite, aquamarine, auralite23, celestite, citrine, fluorite, hiddenite, kunzite, opal (will dry out), prasiolite, rose quartz, smoky quartz, spirit quartz, super seven, topaz, and turquoise. If you have any doubts at all, only use moonlight charging. This can also clear the stones of unwanted energies at the same time if you set your intent to do that as well.

Charging Stones

Some stones can be very energizing to other stones. In most cases, they can also clear their energy. That makes using charging stones a handy method of charging a crystal.  Simply place your crystal needing charging on a cluster or larger piece of a stone that can charge others such as selenite, amethyst cluster, quartz cluster, or carnelian. Leave your crystal there for 24 hours or until it feels like it is at full energy.

Charging Grid

This is a variation on using charging stones. Take a group of quartz crystals (4 to 8 or more) and point them inward in a circle. Place the crystal or stone you want to be charged in the center of the circle and leave it there to charge for 24 hours or more.

Plant Method

Place your crystal among the leaves of a growing, healthy plant for 24 hours or more to charge it. This brings growth energies to the charged crystal.

Burying your crystal in the ground can be a wonderful way to rebalance it. By allowing it to vibrate in harmony with the earth, this method is useful for grounding your stones. This is particularly true for almost any black stone, smoky quartz, red jasper and others. To use this method, bury the stone in the ground for a week or more to charge it, just be mindful that the stone may be sensitive to water. This can also clear unwanted energies at the same time. Be sure when you bury your stone that you mark the area so you know where to find it when the week is up.

While there are other methods to cleanse and recharge your crystals, the ones listed above are the most common. What are your favourite ways to cleanse and recharge your crystals? Let me know in the comments!
